DIY Skincare Products to Make at Home

Although professional skincare products are designed for the most effective and
speedy results, there are some products that you can make yourself with ingredients
found in your pantry or fridge! Make these with your kids or spouse at home for a fun
spa day or add them to your current skincare routine to change things up!

Skin Exfoliator
After cleansing, slough off dead skin cells to reveal brighter looking skin and help the
rest of your products to penetrate deeper with this simple DIY face scrub. Use on your
lips too!

½ cup sugar or salt
¼ cup oil of your choice (olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil,
¼ cup chopped fruit/vegetable*
Mix together and apply to skin in circular motions for 30
seconds. Store the remaining product in the fridge for up to 2
*Cucumber can be used for sensitive skin types.
Tomato can be used to improve skin elasticity.
Strawberry can be used to brighten skin.
Kiwi can be used for a more even complexion.
Pineapple can be used for oily/acne prone skin.

Acne Spot Treatment
Try one of these quick and easy recipes to make this treatment to get rid of blemishes!
Apply before bed after cleansing and toning, or apply throughout the day.
1 Tbsp Coconut oil
1 drop Tea Tree oil
Melt ingredients together and store in fridge.
½ Tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar
1 Tbsp Water
Dilute vinegar in water and apply to problem areas
with a q-tip.
1 Tbsp Baking Soda
½ Tbsp Water
Mix until a paste forms. Apply to blemishes and let dry.
Rinse with water and reapply as needed.


Face Mask
Use this mask up to 3x per week for a soothing, antibacterial skin treatment that will
leave your skin feeling smooth and subtle. Great for all skin types!
4 Tbsp Ground Oats
1 Tbsp Honey
1 Egg
(add a splash of lemon for oily skin types)
Mix ingredients together and apply to clean
skin for 15 minutes. Rinse with water and
proceed with your regular moisturizer.

Are you sensitive to certain skincare ingredients? Knowing your skin type is a crucial step in determining what skincare products you should use and incorporate in your skincare routine.

It’s important to know that your skin type can change. Many things affect your skin type like ageing, hormonal changes and your environment. Doing a periodic “check-in” and recognizing changes in your skin can help keep your skin looking fresh and rejuvenated.

How To Tell What Skin Type You Have – The 5 Skin Types


Skin Type 1: Normal

“Normal” skin is used to describe well-balanced skin. This skin type is an even balance between oily and dry. While oiliness and dryness can be present, it is usually rare and easy to get rid of. If you have normal skin, you usually aren’t prone to breakouts or blemishes and have a well-moisturized t-zone. Pores are small and not easily visible in normal skin, as well. Though this skin type isn’t prone to breakouts and generally requires less maintenance, it is important to find the right skincare regimen to keep your skin looking its best. Those with normal skin should use products that don’t make their skin feel too greasy, perhaps a serum or water-based moisturizer. Similarly, it is important to avoid products that have skin drying qualities. Finding the right balance between the two is the key to keeping normal skin looking healthy and refreshed.


Skin Type 2: Dry

People with this skin type often experience patches and flaking. Pores are usually invisible and the skin may feel “tight.” Many with dry skin acquire premature wrinkles and regular irritation to the skin and “redness” to the skin. People with this skin type should avoid harsh cleansers and toners.

What causes dry skin?

There are a variety of causes of dry skin. Sometimes, it is the environment (season or location) – many places in the world with cold/dry air cause dryness in the skin. Other times, dry skin is hereditary or caused by genetics. (i.e. not producing enough sebum) Sebum is an oily substance produced in the skin’s oil glands and is responsible for keeping our skin soft.


Skin Type 3: Oily

“Oily” skin refers to skin that is often shiny and producing excess oil (sebum) from the skin’s oil glands. People with this skin type tend to suffer from excessive breakouts and very visible pores. Due to the excessive production of oil, the size of your pores and result in clogged pores which later become pimples or blemishes.

What causes oily skin?

Similar to dry skin, there are many factors that can play into oily skin. Oily skin is a mix of both genetic factors and hormonal changes. Many people have oily skin due to a genetic predisposition which causes their oil glands to produce a higher amount of sebum. This oil is produced in both hair and skin follicles. Hormonal changes are also a cause of oily skin. When there is a fluctuation in hormone levels, the body produces more sebum.


Skin Type 4: Combination

Combination skin refers to skin that is a mix between two different skin types. Dry/Oily combination skin is the most common, however, but can also be a mix of two other skin types. This skin type presents one skin type in certain areas of the face and another in others. While combination skin is the most common skin type, it is often hard to identify and treat. It is common in combination skin to have a shiny t-zone as these places typically possess more active oil glands than other areas like your cheeks. People with combination skin often find that chemically based products that contain benzoyl peroxide tend to make dry areas drier and cause the oily areas to have increased production of sebum. When caring for combination skin it is helpful to use two different moisturizers for the different areas of the face.


Skin Type 5: Sensitive

Sensitive skin type presents characteristics of all skin types but also deals with a great amount of irritation and redness. People with sensitive skin types are more prone to skin conditions like rosacea and eczema. Sensitive skin types are easily irritated and inflamed, so it is important to take the natural approach when it comes to finding the right skincare products. Avoid using harsh or drying products to prevent excess redness and inflammation of the skin.

Skincare can be very confusing for beginners. There are so many products and methods out there, that finding the right skincare routine for you can be really hard. Lucky for you, we at Coastal Bliss created a skincare “cheat sheet” to give you the basic steps to skincare and help you figure out what order to apply your skincare products.

Before we start, there are a few things to remember:


1. Keep It Simple

Start slow! Don’t go all out and buy the entire skincare aisle at your local beauty supply. If you’re new to skincare, we recommend starting with a basic routine: cleanse, tone, and moisturize/sunscreen. Products can be added/removed depending on what works for your skin or what your skin needs. Starting small can also help your skin get used to products – especially if you’ve always been a “soap and water” face washer. And if you have a bad reaction, the fewer products, the easier it’ll be to find the culprit!


2. Figure out your skin type!

Different skin types require different skincare products, so figure out your skin type to find the appropriate products for you.

Splash your face with warm water and wash your face with a cleanser to get rid of any dirt on your face or in your pores.

Next, use a toner. Many people skip toners and go right to step 3 over the assumption that toners are drying and strip the skin of protective oils. However, many toners have different uses, so finding the right toner for you is important.


Step 3: Antioxidant Serum

Antioxidant serums are concentrated treatments filled with nutrients to target specific areas on your face. Like toners, many different serums have different uses, so find one that’s right for your skin concerns.


Step 4: Eye Cream

Spot treatments are commonly used for acne spots on the face. Acne spot treatments tend to have different active ingredients, so be sure to consult a dermatologist or skin care specialist to find the right one for you. Benzoyl Peroxide is a common ingredient in acne spot treatments and can dry out your skin, so remember to apply it to the spots you need it. Step 6: Moisturizer or Night Cream
