The number one concern that a lash artist hears regarding eyelash extensions is “How long do they last?” This is sometimes a difficult question to answer considering there are so many factors that affect the retention of your lash extensions but it all comes down to how you take care of them! Of course some factors could include how quickly your lashes grow naturally, if you are taking any medications that would affect your hair or skin, if your skin type is dry or oily, and even your age can all affect how long your lashes last. However, besides all these inexorable factors, there are so many steps that you can follow at home to prolong your lash extensions.

Use a lash cleanser!!! This is one of the most important things you need to do at home to take care of your lashes. Whether you have extensions or not, it is important to keep the area around your eyes clean and free of makeup, dirt and oils – and these can get trapped more easily in lash extensions. If you do not cleanse the eye area regularly, a buildup of natural oils, debris and makeup will slowly break down the bond of the adhesive used to attach the extension to your natural lash. To properly cleanse your lash extensions, use a foaming lash shampoo with a small fluffy brush to make sure you get in between all the lashes. Gently rinse with water or a wet cotton pad and brush through them a few times with a mascara wand to dry.

Be gentle with your lashes. Be careful to not rub your eyes, try to sleep on your back, and do not use an eyelash curler or mascara on your eyelash extensions. These will all weaken the bond of the lash adhesive and cause your extensions to have a shorter lifespan.

Try an eyelash serum. You want to make sure you are not using any products with oil based ingredients around your eyes with lash extensions. You can however use an eyelash serum, which helps in making your natural lashes grow longer and thicker. Most lash serum‘s are safe to use with extensions, and can also be used without extensions to enhance your natural eyelashes. Lash serum will make your natural lash stay in it’s growth phase for longer, which will make your extensions last longer as they wont shed as often.
